A conversation with the Universe
There is an apple tree at the bottom of a garden, old and heavy, leaning over the low wall into the lane.
She takes the windfalls. Every autumn she walks down with a basket and gathers what has already dropped into the grass, the bruised ones, the ones the wasps found first.
Above her head the branches are thick with fruit she could reach by standing on the wall.
She has never once reached up. Somewhere she decided the fallen ones were the portion assigned to her.
The universe is sitting on the wall, swinging its heels.
Who told you it was only the ground fruit, it says.
She does not have anyone to name.
Nobody is counting what you take, it says. The tree is not keeping a total.
What she receives takes nothing from anyone. The tree is not smaller for her reaching.
The Practice
Ask today for the version you actually want, not the reduced version you would settle for.
Say the higher number, the better date, the fuller request, out loud or in writing. A system that asks for the windfalls is telling the field what it believes it is owed.
